Dialogue- There is only a small bit of dialogue in this clip, because any more would have diminished the impact. The time for words has passed, but the only words that are spoken have great effect. Achilles tells Hector to get up and that he "won't let a stone take [his] glory." This is the heart of Achilles' character, his drive for glory, but also a moral code that underlies this no matter how he tries to hide it. Achilles would never take down a man who tripped, no matter who that man had done to him. There is determination and confidence of the win in his words that define his personality. He knows he will win.
Sound Effects- Many sound effects were used in this clip and to great effect. As there was not much dialogue, each sound could be heard distinctly. The clash and the ring of swords. The sound of the heavy and labored breathing of Hector's wife and all the other watchers. The two men's breathing, their grunts, and the shouts of pain. Even the sound of Hector's foot sliding on the gravel as he falls. Coming to a climax with the sound of the sword piercing flesh and Hector falling to the ground. All of these effects set the mood of the battle. The fear of the watchers and their emotions that are too deep to express in words. The battle that is far from the normal, a battle of two warriors pitted against each other by circumstances beyond their control. It has come to a point where words are no longer necessary, where swords are left to settle everything.
Music- The battle is accompanied for the most part by the use of drums. In the waiting periods between each attack the drums stay light, almost in anticipation. The outcome is uncertain and it almost appears a game. When they each make an attack the drums build in intensity with the clash of their swords.
When the Achilles stabs Hector the drums stop and a mournful musical cry rings up. It is so tribal and so soulful that the death of Hector provides an emotional climax. The intense and sad music that swells toward the end pays tribute to the nobility of Hector's character and the unfairness of his death.
